The Grampians Peaks Trail is a long and diverse walk. Over its 160 km length, it offers a range of experiences for anyone seeking time in nature. At the Grampians Peaks Walking Company, we have developed a range of tours and services to make those experiences accessible to all. No matter your level of hiking experience, your time constraints, budget or thirst for adventure, we can bring your experience to life. Read on to find out more about the GPT Stages.
The Grampians Peaks Trail is officially split into three main stages: North, Central, and South. Each of these stages journeys through unique landscapes to take on its own characteristics. Our Expeditions follow the full length of each stage with each one connecting to the next, giving you the opportunity to explore every step of the trail.
Over 4 or 5 days, you will be guided by one of our expert local guides from start to end of your stage, walking, dining, camping, and living on the trail.

Frequently asked questions
Who will be on this Journey?
Each walk is led by one of our local guides from start to finish depending on the size of the group there may be an additional walking guide. On top of your walking guides, each trip is supported by camp support staff who will host you at each campsite, set up the tents, boil the kettle and prepare your freshly cooked trail meals.
How long are GPT Stages?
The Northern Expedition is 4 days and 3 nights while the Central and Southern stages are 5 days and 4 nights. If completing each stage separately, you’ll total 14 days on the trail as the last day of the Central Expedition and the first day of the Southern are half days due to the access point to get on and off the trail.
Where will I spend the evening?
Evenings will be spent in one of the hiker camps along the Grampians Peaks Trail. Each campsite varies slightly, but generally, you will find raised timber tent platforms, seating and tables and two unisex composting toilets. While most campsites have enclosed communal shelters for relaxing and dining, there are some campsites on the Central Expedition that do not have fixed shelters so the experience at camp can be dictated more strongly by the weather conditions.
What will I sleep on?
Our twin share hiking tents will be pitched on raised timber tent pads, so they will always be smooth and level and you will sleep on your own inflatable hiking mattress (available for hire if required). If you’re a solo hiker we will provide a spacious single-person tent, which will be placed on a platform with another single tent. Upon booking there is an option to request a single supplement so you can have the privacy of your own space on your own platform.
What is supplied?
We will supply things everything to do with food and lodgings including tents, cooking and eating equipment and food. You will need to provide or hire your own clothing, backpack, sleeping bag and mattress. See the details of each program for a full packing/equipment list.
What do I need to carry?
You will only need to carry your own personal belongings. Essentially, if you bring it yourself, you’ll need to carry it! We will take care of all of the group equipment such as tents, cooking gear and food. Depending on the season, your backpack will likely weigh between 10 and 12kgs.
What will I be eating?
All our programs are filled with healthy, fresh and delicious meals. We will take care of everything (as outlined in each itinerary) for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even some snacks along the way. A typical breakfast on the trail would be muesli or porridge with dried fruit, tea and quality ground coffee. Lunch could be a freshly prepared cold meat or falafel wrap, and dinner will vary from season to season but always be freshly prepared, as locally sourced as possible and of course, plentiful to keep you fueled! While we will provide some trail mix, snack bars and fruit throughout the day, you are of course welcome to bring your own if you have any favourites! Have specific dietary needs? No problem! Just let us know at the time of your booking and we’ll take care of it, or get in touch for a chat.
